How to Deal with Insurers After a Car Accident

Blount Law Firm PLLC July 25, 2018

Working with an insurance company is no walk in the park. Neither are car accidents. The two combined can lead to a lot of stress. If you are in the wake of an auto accident, you have already dealt with the other driver and investigators on the scene. You diligently contacted your insurance in those 24 hours.

When we think of insurance, we think of protection. But if you give the wrong information, it could sabotage a claim.

There are some things you should and should not do when dealing with insurers, which include:

  • DO – Notify your insurance company in a timely matter. You’ll want your insurance company to cover your collision loss. Your insurance company definitely owes you compensation for property damage. You never know what the other driver’s insurance company is like. They might make lowball offers, which won’t cut it.

  • DO – Submit your medical bills to your insurance. Later, they may reimburse you through the other person’s insurance.

  • DON’T – Avoid exaggerating or misleading. It’s important you receive compensation for your pain and suffering, but accidently missing details or adding on to your accident could result in consequences.

  • DON’T – Don’t accept a settlement unless it fully satisfies all your damages. An insurance company’s first offer is usually its lowest. You don’t need to sign anything until yours needs are met.

Dealing with insurers can get tricky. Remember that there is no need to apologize at the scene of the accident or after. Regardless of your situation, you can seek compensation. Insurance companies are legally required to act in good faith. Don’t accept your settlement unless it’s been reviewed by an expert.
